Dr Quintin Wilson is the founder and principal dentist of New England Oral Surgery and New England Oral Surgery. Growing up on a dairy farm in the New England Quintin is passionate about providing care to rural patients and has focused his career on Oral Surgery and Implant dentistry.

Dental implants FAQs
How many appointments will dental implants take?
You will need at least two appointments at Warnervale Dental prior to commenting dental implant treatment. This is to make sure you’ve had a chance to discuss the best treatment options, and been made aware of any potential complications. The cost of the treatment and consent will be discussed in detail in these initial appointments.
We give you the knowledge and space to ask all of the questions you may have, and to express any concerns.
What is involved in the placement of dental implants?
First, x-rays are taken to allow safe and accurate planning, alongside digital scanning and intraoral photographs. The location and size of the implants are all determined prior to the surgery day.
The implant procedure involves placing one or more pre-determined titanium screws into the jaw bone.
Are dental implants painful?
We use local anaesthetics to ensure patient comfort, as the implant procedure is very delicate and accurate.
After surgery, we would generally prescribe antibiotics and painkillers, depending on the procedures. To allow for healing and reduce infection risk, we advise that you have a minimum of one day off intense physical activity.
Could dental implants be placed under sedation?
Our dentists are definitely able to perform the procedure under either oral sedation, twilight or I.V sedation.
Please note that selecting ‘twilight sedation’ means you will fall asleep while we perform the procedure, leaving you with no memory of the event. It’s important that you organise a driver and carer to look after you for the rest of the day.
Can dental implants fail?
Dental implants generally have a long-term and high success rate, but there are limitations with everything.
Some of the factors that reduce the success rate are,
- Smoking
- Poor oral hygiene
- Chronic systemic disease
- Large chewing forces on a newly placed implant
While all the above may have an effect of the success rate, they are not contraindications for dental implants. Regular follow ups and hygiene appointments are absolutely crucial to ensure the health of your implants.
What are the main contraindications to dental implants?
- Uncontrolled systemic disease, such as diabetes, osteoporosis, pulmonary issues.
- Patients receiving high doses of infusions for multiple myeloma and severe osteoporosis.
- Patients receiving chemotherapy drugs.
- Bleeding disorders.
- Immune suppressive disorders.
- Age of people younger then approximately eighteen years of age.
- Bone disorders such as Paget’s disease.

Please note that all surgical procedures carry risks. These treatments do not apply to and cannot be performed on everyone. Thorough examinations and assessment is required, and the outcomes may vary depending on multiple factors.
If you’re concerned about dental procedures or discomfort, please be aware our dentists are very gentle and considerate of your experience. We also offer dental sedation, otherwise known as sleep dentistry, to help make the experience as positive as possible.
Dental Implants often represent the best options for the replacement of missing teeth.
It is nearly always better to keep your natural teeth if they can be restored or maintained. If this is not possible then implant supported crowns may be a great options for you.
If you have lost a tooth or have been told a tooth cannot be saved it may be the best time to book a consultation to discuss your options.
A dental implant consultation will likely consist of the following:
- A digital scan of your mouth to evaluate the best location for your implant crown (and suitability of your mouth for implants).
- A Cone Beam Scan of your jaws to determine the amount of bone you have available for implants.
- A discussion to establish what your expectations and goals are for treatment and whether implants can realistically achieve these for you.
- A provisional treatment plan including costs, stages, duration of treatment, risks, and preparation required.
